You need to make real change happen. Yet you don’t know how .
In its simplest form change happens as a result of three basic questions:
- What must change?
- Why must it change?
- How do we change?
The What and Why of change
The What and Why of change is the preparation for the change.
- You build a map of What will change and What must be done (and by Whom and When of course) to make it successful.
- You find motive for the change by clarifying or reaffirming the Why of the change, to ensure that everyone involved has the best chance to understand why we need this to happen.
Rubber meets road
However, the How of change is where the rubber really hits the road. The way you approach change moves you from idea to experience.
What and Why are not change in themselves, merely the preparation. Evidence of new behaviour reflects the true change, and this is achieved within the How.
Change needs action
Change requires action to become reality. In our language, what you value is what you do. When your behaviour reflects the new action, you are changing.
Most change fails in in execution due to one or more of:
- a poorly built change map,
- a lack of commitment from people in the organization,
- insufficient or ineffective communication or
- a simple lack of skills in how to “do” the change.
A framework for real change
Twenty years ago, this realization lead me to develop my own experiential learning capacity (learning by doing or learning to change by changing) and then on to develop a few tools to help in the How of change:
- MC4C – a framework for change,
- Bloom – a digital change agent / tutor,
- Change readiness self-assessment, and
- Monitoring dashboards for individuals and groups.
In the How of change you need to: See the underlying motive for change, Reflect on the need for change and most importantly Act. To act is to take the next small step which is aligned to the motive. We call this a Change Cycle: to repeatedly See, Reflect and Respond in individual iterations. These individual cycles then form part of an individual and (potentially) collective dashboard for monitoring the overall change.
Your unique experience, and your ability to shift your experience, is the essence of the “How”. To See, Reflect and Respond becomes the heart of how you do change.
A digital change coach called Bloom
Having equipped people to do this via workshops and training material over a number of years, we have recently developed a digital change agent called Bloom to complement our MC4C framework, as well as a change readiness self-assessment tool.
Our suite of tools is accessible to most businesses and groups, as well as the individual who wishes to do it themselves with or without the help of a change facilitator.
